Kannaduki no Miko
The people at yamibo.com were very fanatic abt this anime. As it's main theme was shoujo-ai, I thought I didn't wanna delve into it. But well, after Shizuru/Natsuki became my fav pairing, I decided to give it a try.
The story: In a this ideal village, time passes slowly. Mostly good things happen. But on the 16th birthday of Kurusugawa Himeko and Himemiya Chikane, the village was surrounded by darkness. Orochi(monster of darkness) awoke his 8 descendents to kill the socceress of the sun and moon. (who are himeko and chikane). Oogami Souma, one of the orochi heads, turned against his destiny in order to protect Himeko, the one he loves. He destroys most of the other orochi's mecha everytime when Himeko is in danger. Chikane, secretly in love with Himeko, detests her inability to protect her, even more so when Himeko shows signs of falling for Souma. But in front of Himeko, she puts up a brave front and even encourages her to accept Souma's dates. All this time, though, both of the socceress tried to awaken some giant mecha on the moon to destroy orochi, but they always fail. That's when the 2nd head of Orochi approaches Chikane and tells her of her pass life and why they are unable to call upon the gods' power. It's because in their past life (1000 yrs ago?) Chikane, as the socceress of the moon, after killing Orochi, had to kill the socceress of the sun (himeko's past life) in order to return the world to it's previous state before the battle. Somewhere in her heart, Chikane hated the gods for making her kill the one she loved, so in this life time, they couldn't summon successfully. Realizing this, Chikane turns against Himeko and joins orochi as the 8th head. She rapes Himeko and takes away Souma's mecha and kills all the other heads of Orochi. She continually hurts Himeko in order for her to hate her. And in her final move to destroy the world, Himeko finally snapped and lunges at her with her sword, impaling Chikane in the chest...
Review: The mecha actions sucks. I've been pampered by better mecha animes that those here look terrible to me. Thus, the only attraction is the love story. But it is tainted with too much fanservice and testosterone exuded by Souma. I couldn't stand Himeko's nonstop whining, going "it's my fault" every episode. Plus her asking Chikane "what should I do?" at the ending of each preview serves to irritate me more. The only interesting character is Chikane. Loving so much but knowing that it is against all rules of society, coupled with Himeko falling for Souma, it's painful. All the memories of past life only makes it worst. But even so, I can't agree with her raping Himeko. The ends do not justify the means, even though Himeko seems to get over it very fast. Her reaction is illogical. Normally you hate the person who raped you. But no... she is weeping over why Chikane turned into a monster... Ok, I guess it's a way of the writers showing who much she actually loves Chikane, to the extend that she can forgive such acts...
Generally, I prefer the 2nd half the series, 6th ep onwards, where the story has more meaning and good angst. Haha... killing the one you love after you've saved the world is a sucky business.
Nice try though, but I'm afraid it ain't going into my collection.
