Soukyuu no Fafner: Characters Review I

Makabe Kazuki(right): Main character, yet one of the few who I consider boring. Apparantly he's more genetically suitable to pilot fafners among the kids. Hence, his better performance. He even gets a more powerful toy from his mom later in the series. He's not unlikeable, just too normal. I still like him, but much lesser than the rest. His interactions with his father in his house and in Toomi's residence are hilarious though. I'm sure he feels for Maya (he calls her Toomi... in a very cute way) but his reactions to Soushi's fate was... rather over, IMHO.

Minashirou Soushi(left): The cool guy with scar over his left eye. I always thought the scar was superficial. Turns out, he really is one-eyed. He helps out the pilots through the Siegfried System, and suffers all the pain that the pilots connected to the system suffer which are accompanied with flashbacks. In short, he suffers the most pain. He is kinda awkward with emotional expression, so he normally is all business. When he actually tries to, hilarious moments occur, as he doesn't succeed. Sadly, he doesn't survive despite helping the pilots win the last battle in his much deteriorating condition. *sobz* He made it pass the last obstacle, but not enough to pass the finishing line...

Toomi Maya(centre): Ahhh... Gentle, considerate and quiet in nature, but not submissive. A person with conviction and has her own opinions despite what others say. She spoke up for Kazuki when the whole island thought he'd betrayed them. Ok, that maybe cause of some emotions, but to shout at the commanding officer in front of all senior staff? That's what I call guts. She stood up for her best friend Shouko also plus others I think. But then, all talk no action really is just all talk right? Fortunately, it appeared that Yumiko(her sis) hid her actual data. Maya is actually very suitable to pilot fafners, inferior in ability only to Kazuki. Obviously. The way she handled her enemies in ep19 was so cool. Nobody else in the show exhibited such calmness in battle on their first mission. Her moments with Kazuki are mostly subtle and more heartwarming than intense emotions. It's what I like. however, I like her interactions with her sis and Mizoguchi-san more. It's rare comedy. A necessary relief from the dark and pressuring atmosphere of the general plot.
